Free February 2026
Everyone’s invited to this remarkable Victorian independent museum free of charge during February 2026, to see what BBC TV presenter Ian Hamilton described as a “treasure trove of objects from across the centuries”.
As one of Scotland’s oldest independent museums, run as a charity and managed by local volunteers, Stromness Museum usually charges for entry tickets and ‘friends’ membership subscriptions. But as Natural History Collections Curatorial Assistant Dr Gareth Squire said, “The museum is there for everyone…. It’s a wonderfully diverse collection that we’d like to give people the opportunity to come and see.” We are therefore holding a Free February for the second year running in 2026, with free entry for all visitors for the whole month.
As a further enticement, Free February visitors signing up to support the Museum by becoming a ‘friend’ will have the chance to win a Stromness Museum gift voucher worth £25! So, if you’ve never stepped inside the Museum, or you haven’t yet seen the current exhibition Powered by People: Orkney’s Renewable Energy Story, make a belated New Year’s resolution to visit us this February.
We will be open from Monday 2nd February 2026 on Monday to Saturday from 11.00am to 3.30pm and closed on Sundays.
Come and find us at 52 Alfred St., Stromness, Orkney KW16 3DH.
