The sailing cutter 'Maid Nellie' with skipper David Regan (centre) and his two crewmen, Leslie Shephard (left) and Jon Field (right), 1959. They intended to sail the North Atlantic by the old Viking route. They sailed out of Stromness on July 31st headed for the Faroes but, after 55 hours at sea, were forced to head for Pierowall, Westray. They then headed for Kirkwall where they intended to lay up for the winter before attempting the trip again. See Orcadian 13/8/1959, page 4.
