The sailing cutter 'Maid Nellie' and skipper David Regan, 1959. He and his crew intended to sail the North Atlantic by the old Viking route. They sailed out of Stromness on July 31st headed for the Faroes but, after 55 hours at sea, were forced to head for Pierowall, Westray. They then headed for Kirkwall where they intended to lay up for the winter before attempting the trip again. See Orcadian 13/8/1959, page 4.
