Class: Bivalvia. 1 specimen. Very large and triangular with both valves present. The shell is very thin and fragile. Fan mussels are one of Britain's largest and rarest mussels. It lives in the sublittoral, often at great depths with up to two thirds buried in sediments. This species is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Protection Act 1981. As of 1989 it is a crime to kill, injure, possess or sell this animal or its shell.
