Flint ballast (10 pieces) from ship "Herald" of Baltimore, Pullen (Master), wrecked at Ness, Tankerness, 24/5/1847. Herald on route from Amsterdam to U.S.A. with coffee beans, tobacco pipes and 106-112 immigrants. She was ashore in thick fog. The immigrants were landed and taken to Leith in "Mary Balfour" on 29th June. The wreck was purchased and broken up by Kirkwall merchants. Ship's pump, reputedly from "Herald", lies in farmyard at Ness. Beach to north of Cromwell's fort still strewn with flint ballast.
