A pair of "CLOGS'. This Stromness version of the ice skate was widely used on the steep road on close-packed snow before the prevalence of the motor car and the habit of gritting and salting roads. White-wood, carved to fit the sole of a shoe; a zinc 'runner' fastened by four screws; string or twine passed through holes at the back and front were used to tie the clog onto the boot or shoe. Made by the donor for his son, c. 1975. According to the donor, the idea for clogs was brought to Stromness last century by a Faroese who came to work at Copeland's Yard.
