The Cairns: Living in the Landscape
The Cairns is an extensive, well-preserved, prehistoric and early historic settlement spanning the Neolithic to Viking/Norse eras situated at Windwick Bay on the isle of South Ronaldsay, Orkney. The UHI Archaeology Institute has led an ongoing archaeological research project centered on the site and its wider landscape, since 2006. At the heart of the excavations lies a substantial broch. The exhibition gives an overview of life at the broch, how the inhabitants of The Cairns lived in the landscape - both in terms of resource use and their cosmology. The 'Cairns Cog' is a highlight of the exhibition - on display for the first time since its discovery and conservation.
